January Scrappy Story of the Month
Posted January 31, 2017 by Terri Sjodin in Scrappy
Happy Scrappy New Year! My goal with this blog in 2017 is to take the time once a month to profile clever individuals from all walks of life who are playing big and making things happen! I hope that when you hear their stories it will inspire you and help support your efforts to maintain your “scrappy spirit” all year long!
The January Scrappy person(s) of the month: Ryan Hickman and Damion Hickman
You may recognize the name Damion Hickman from Chapter 10 of Scrappy: A Little Book About Choosing to Play Big as the graphic designer who landed a dream account with Quiksilver. But this is a different story… I thought you would enjoy hearing about how Damion has passed along his legacy of scrappiness to his son, Ryan Hickman.
Ryan is a 7-year-old boy who has a passion for recycling. He has been making the world a better place and making money at the same time since he was 3. His efforts caught the attention of a writer for a local newspaper who was inspired to share Ryan’s story: http://www.thecapistranodispatch.com/ryans-recycling-green-issue/
You might think that this local attention would be the end of the story… but it was really just the beginning!
According to Damion, this article was the start of an incredible wave of public interest in his efforts and story and on Monday he was invited to be appear on The Ellen Degeneres Show to help inspire others to recycle and help save the planet:
I have loved hearing about the progression of Ryan’s story from Damion over the last year. So fun to watch it all unfold. Ryan is playing big and there is no end in sight!
It just goes to show that no matter how old you are, being scrappy is a smart play! And kudos to Damion and Andrea Hickman for being supportive scrappy parents and encouraging Ryan to pursue his vision!
